I actually prefer Infernal Affairs too. If I were doing a leading man countdown, Tony Leung would be really far up there. I liked the Departed fine, but there's just no contest for me--Tony's a fucking brilliant actor, the kind of guy who seems to be capable of doing absolutely anything, all the while coming across as the most charming human being on the planet. There was a lot about Infernal that was just too stylish, I'll give you that, but it fucking MOVES, it's such a well-paced film. Great list so far!

I'm not sure that Vince Colletta erased quite as much as he's reputed to have done. It's a shame to read comments that essentially say "I like the guy's inking but I can't forgive the fact that he erased things."

Colletta was one of the giants of early comics. His art will be discussed and his practices debated until the end of time.

You got it, the rankings are fairly arbitrary. Later on, in the top 20 or so, not so much--definitely not in the top 10. But here, yeah, I don't necessarily think the Bourne movies are better than Fear and Trembling, say.

More goodness! Comments:

I also saw Infernal Affairs first, but I think I might like the Departed better because, hey, Martin Scorsese. Also: Jack Nicholson, Alec Baldwin, Mark Wahlberg, etc. They're both good though.

I love the Gilbert Hernandez comparison with Almodovar. In fact, when I was watching that movie, I couldn't get it out of my head how much Penelope Cruz looked like Luba. If they were going to make a movie of Palomar, she would be the one to play the role, at least before she became mayor and gained weight.

Oh, man, Little Otik is great. Svankmeyer is hella fucked up, and I love him for it.

I dunno about the Bourne movies, but I still haven't seen the third one. The shakycam fight scenes in the second one really put me off the whole enterprise. They're probably still pretty decent, but I would put them well below a bunch, if not all, of the movies you've already listed. Take that, arbitrary rankings!

I haven't seen Haynes' Dylan movie, due to my zero interest in the subject. That's one of the reasons I'm calling this 50 great films, not the 50 greatest films; I haven't seen everything that would be a serious contender. Also, we're going to get some odd choices coming up, based more on my personal taste than any sense of what's "objectively" great.

Ditto for Prairie Home Companion--i.e. I haven't seen it yet, although I do plan to eventually.

I take your point about F911 failing as propaganda, but I'd say it's too soon to tell whether Sicko will similarly fail. It seems to me that your country is still a long way from an adequate health care system. That said, I liked Sicko a lot too, especially coming as I do from a country with precisely the kind of universal health care that Moore is championing. I particularly liked the scene in Sicko, towards the end, where Moore discovers that this guy who runs an anti-Moore website is in financial trouble due to health problems, so he writes him a big cheque. It was simultaneously noble and completely cynical, and I thought a brilliant rhetorical move.

Yes, I love this! Lots of room for discussion and thought-provoking comparisons. Here are some, although I don't know if they'll be thought-provoking:

What did you think of Haynes' Bob Dylan movie? I liked it well enough, although I think it might be better for Dylan fans/freaks. Given the choice, I think I would choose Far From Heaven too.

Fahrenheit 9/11: I agree that it's a great bit of propaganda, but the problem with it is, it failed. Sure, it might have had viewers crying for impeachment (I know I was), but that didn't happen, and Bush won another term. It was pretty powerful, but ultimately unsuccessful. If I was going to choose a Moore movie, I would have gone with Bowling for Columbine (which also had its problems, like an assault on a dementia-addled Charlton Heston, but was pretty powerful as well) or Sicko (which made some great points about US healthcare, even if it could have been more measured in its appraisal of France or Cuba).

France's "cinema of discomfort": I probably shouldn't make speculations about upcoming posts, but I assume this will include Irreversible? Because, damn, that's kind of the ultimate entry there.

Gosford Park: That certainly was a great movie, but I think I would have gone with A Prairie Home Companion for the Altman pick. Probably just a matter of taste though. Man, I miss Altman.

Good choices all around though (American Psycho AND American Splendor! Yes!), and I'm looking forward to seeing what's next. Rock.
